Mahr certified according to ISO 14001 for the first time

| Marketing Team

At the end of 2020, the environmental management system of Mahr GmbH at the Göttingen site was certified for the first time according to the internationally recognized environmental management standard DIN EN ISO 14001. The successful audit took place from December 14 to 16 by the certification company ESC Cert GmbH.

The auditors assessed all processes of the existing environmental management system, which Mahr has implemented for many years and is constantly developing. For this purpose, they collected and evaluated information on environmentally relevant topics in the various departments. For example, they looked at ecological aspects in product development, in the selection of suppliers, in the handling of hazardous materials, or in waste separation and disposal. The auditors also examined risk management and emergency plans. "The auditors confirmed that our existing environmental management system meets the required specifications of the international standard DIN EN ISO 14001," explained Eckhard Fangmeier, Director Global Quality Systems. "Certification is a consistent step for Mahr, as it represents an important criterion for our customers. Environmental protection and sustainability are becoming increasingly important in the business relationship."

Many positive things at Mahr

The auditors positively highlighted several points. For example, Mahr analyzes the individual environmental aspects and the associated opportunities and risks in a differentiated manner, enabling the company to derive clear strategic and operational environmental goals. At the Göttingen site, for example, the aim is to reduce energy consumption and the associated CO2 emissions. Mahr therefore operates a combined heat and power plant that generates about half of the electricity required for production itself. The heat is used for the buildings, and a downstream absorption chiller additionally converts heat into cold. This is used to cool the production machines. In addition, the assembly halls, among other things, are air-conditioned so that the measuring equipment can be assembled and put into operation at the temperatures required for this purpose.

The company's management and executives identify strongly with the issues of sustainability, environmental protection and occupational safety. In production, the company intensively considers environmental aspects, for example by efficiently using recyclable materials and recyclable packaging. Environmental aspects are also a focus in the development, design and procurement departments. For example, Mahr pays attention to ease of repair as early as the development phase, avoids critical materials, and specifies environmentally friendly packaging. The consistent collection of separate waste and its documentation as well as the digital information channels for environmental topics such as website, bulletin board, internal blog and digital welcome folder were also convincing.
